Our Program
Class Structure
Poe Co has two classes: Acorns (3- to 4-year-olds) and Apples (4- to 5-year-olds). Each class has up to 16 students, with two teachers and one parent-helper per day, allowing for a 6:1 child to adult ratio.
Schedule
Poe Co is a 5 day per week program, although some families choose to attend less frequently.
Regular schedule hours (M-F): 8:30am-12:00pm
Early drop-off (M-F): 8:00-8:30am
Extended day (M-Th): 12:00-3:00pm
Both early drop-off and extended day are available on an ongoing or drop-in basis, subject to availability.
Poe Co largely adopts the HISD school year calendar.
Daily Routine
Our program offers a flexible routine with both individually-directed play and coordinated, group activities:
- Outdoor play on arrival
- Morning group circle
- Free-flow center time, indoors or out
- Snack
- Outdoor play
- Closing group circle, including Rice Literacy Project child-led storytelling
Facilities
Our classrooms and playground are designed to support our program curriculum and goals. We have two dedicated Poe Co classrooms and a secured playground.
While Poe Co is co-located with St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Poe Co is not affiliated with any religious denomination.
Outdoor Classroom
Our students enjoy plenty of outdoor time. They can often be seen splashing in puddles in rain gear, digging in the garden, making sand ad mud creations, riding tricycles, and generally enjoying the outdoors. Rain boots and a change of clothing are on the supply list, as we encourage our children to dig, pour, splash, and create outside.
Indoor Classrooms
The two indoor classrooms are designed to be stimulating, age-appropriate and safe. Indoor activities follow a weekly theme, with wonderfully imaginative new centers each week. Centers include a pouring center, art, dramatic play, reading, writing, science, math, blocks, and art.
